Zirconium(IV) oxide is used as an additive in the production of piezoelectric crystals, in high-frequency induction coils and in ceramic glazes. It finds application as solid electrolyte in electrochromic devices and precursor to electroceramic lead zirconate titanate (PZT), as insulator in transistors, as a thermal barrier coating in jet and diesel engines and as diamond simulant in jewelry. It is used in oxygen sensors, fuel cell membranes and in orthopaedic implants of hip joints. It is coated on silica gel surface and found to be used in the extraction of chromium from aqueous solutions at a pH of about 3.

This Thermo Scientific Chemicals brand product was originally part of the Alfa Aesar product portfolio. Some documentation and label information may refer to the legacy brand. The original Alfa Aesar product / item code or SKU reference has not changed as a part of the brand transition to Thermo Scientific Chemicals.
